Veterinary POCT: The Fluorescence Immunochromatography Advantage¶
White Paper¶
Executive Summary¶
Veterinary point-of-care testing (POCT) is transitioning from qualitative visual strips to quantitative, instrument-read diagnostics. The enabling technology is fluorescence immunochromatography (FICT) — a lateral-flow immunoassay that replaces colloidal-gold visual readout with a fluorophore and dedicated fluorometer, delivering ELISA-grade sensitivity in minutes at the point of care.
The Problem with Traditional LFIA¶
| Limitation | Consequence |
|---|---|
| Visual readout | Subjective, operator-dependent |
| Qualitative only | No concentration → no monitoring |
| ng/ml sensitivity | Misses low-abundance biomarkers |
| High batch CV | Poor reproducibility |
The FICT Solution¶
| Capability | FICT |
|---|---|
| Readout | Instrument fluorescence (objective) |
| Quantitation | Concentration (mg/L, µg/dL, pmol/L) |
| Sensitivity | pg/ml — 10–100× better than colloidal gold |
| CV% | < 10% |
| Time to result | 3–15 min |
Clinical Applications¶
- Inflammation: CRP (canine), SAA (feline) — same-visit treatment decisions.
- Renal: SDMA — early CKD detection, muscle-mass independent.
- Cardiac: NT-proBNP — heart-failure staging.
- Endocrine: T4, cortisol, progesterone — breeding and adrenal management.
- Infectious disease: CPV, CDV, FPV, FeLV — immediate isolation/isolation decisions.
Economic Case¶
| Metric | Send-out Lab | FICT POCT |
|---|---|---|
| Turnaround | 1–3 days | Same visit |
| Cost per test | $15–50 | $5–15 |
| Revenue capture | Lost to lab | Retained in-clinic |
Conclusion¶
FICT is the technology that makes quantitative veterinary POCT clinically and economically viable. It transforms the clinic from a sample-collection point into a same-visit diagnostic center — improving patient outcomes, client compliance, and practice revenue simultaneously.
